Dune (by Frank Herbert)

閱讀版本：40th Anniversary Edition

終於有機會拜讀這本大作，那麼就也來談一下 Dune (台譯：沙丘魔堡) 吧。

沙丘是個關於預言的故事，也是描述主人翁 Paul Atreides 如何以一個外來者的身分，最終成為 Arrakis 行星的聖戰領導人、先知、和救世主，也就是 Muad'Dib 的故事。白人救世主來到沙漠行星，經過一番曲折，帶領著漠地原住民 Freman 抵抗反派勢力似乎帶了點 Lawrence of Arabia【阿拉伯的勞倫斯】的味道，但因為有了「預言」(或是宿命) 這個元素，讓 Dune 的基調和 Lawrence of Arabia 大相逕庭；宿命這個主軸反而和 Star Wars 比較類似了 (畢竟 Star Wars 「參考」了 Dune 中的不少概念)。

作者 Frank Herbert 鉅細靡遺地建構出 Dune 的宇宙觀也是本書的一大賣點，劇情中未說明白的也可在附錄中窺知一二，例如：Arrakis 的生態、宗教以及 Bene Gesserit 的動機和目的。至於 Spacing Guild、Butlerian Jihad 等比較偏 Arrakis 外的主題，得等到續作中才會較詳細地提及。另一個特點，個人認為 Herbert 在故事的進行當中，盡可能地把「科技」(物) 的比例降到最低，也因此能夠有更大的空間去描繪人和事 (innerspace)，甚至是每個角色內心的想法 (這一點在 David Lynch 的電影版中被忠實地呈現)。因為有了完整的世界觀、用了足夠篇幅來勾勒人物，也才讓 Paul-Muad'Dib 這個沙丘救世主的故事更加有說服力。這點用文字來表現遠比用影像要深刻、順暢，這也是為什麼電影版 Dune 無法有層次地描寫 Paul 的心境轉折，最終成為失敗作。

另外，書中許多引言 (The collected sayings of Muad'Dib) 也發人深省，個人尤其喜歡下面這兩段：

"There is in all things a pattern that is part of our universe. It has symmetry, elegance, and grace — those qualities you find always in that which the true artist captures. You can find it in the turning of the seasons, in the way sand trails along a ridge, in the branch clusters of the creosote bush or the pattern of its leaves. We try to copy these patterns in our lives and our society, seeking the rhythms, the dances, the forms that comfort. Yet, it is possible to see peril in the finding of ultimate perfection. It is clear that the ultimate pattern contains its own fixity. In such perfection, all things move toward death."

"How often it is that the angry man rages denial of what his inner self is telling him."

當然，作為一本科幻經典作品和課堂指定閱讀，能討論的東西非常多，例如伍軒宏在中譯版【沙丘救世主】(Dune Messiah) 的導讀中提到：「... 小說出版於反體制、性別關係重整的六十年代，書中的性別政治卻顯得傳統。男性彌賽亞英雄人物的強勢形象，除了使讀者覺得魅力無窮外，也引發質疑。」跟教授讓我們在課堂上討論的「是否有女性彌賽亞角色」不謀而合。你可以輕易地找到許多女英雄角色 (heroine)，但女性救世主呢？
